Who You Are

TakaI have crossed the horizon to find you.

I know your name.

They have stolen the heart from inside you,

But this does not define you.

This is not who you are.

You know who you are.” – Moana

You’ve seen this, haven’t you? If not, here’s the link. Please watch it; it’s one minute long. I’ll wait….

Moana is chosen to journey afar to seek out this being, Te Fiti, a force of life, in order to restore her stolen heart. On her journey, she encounters Ta Ka, a being who is filled with rage… consumed by it..a destructive force.

In this scene, Moana realizes that the two, Te Fiti and Ta Ka, are one and the same.

Maybe I’m just a little too emotional during movies, but does this scene crack anyone else’s heart wide open?

I have crossed the horizon to find you”

I can’t help but think:

…although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.” – Philippians 2:6-7

“I know your name”

But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” – John 10:2-3

“They have stolen the heart from inside you

I’d adjust this line a bit…”sin’s corrupted the heart that’s inside you”…

The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; Who can understand it?” – Jeremiah 17:9

Is there a more accurate description of the human heart? I echo Jeremiah as I look at my own.

“But this does not define you”

Not if you’re in Christ. If you see the darkness, the destruction, the consuming anger within yourself, realize that Jesus came to free you of it all…to make you new.

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17

“This is not who you are.”

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” – John 1:12

His children. That’s who you were meant to be.

“You know who you are”

This line, I prefer to change to: “I know who you are.”

“Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is.” – 1 John 3:2

Are you shocked by the thoughts in your mind? The hatred you feel? The depravity you see in the news?

We were never meant to be this way. Life was never meant to be lived apart from God, the very source of life.

When you are angered by others, maybe tempted to hate, remember…this is not who they are…who they were meant to be. But God knows. And His Son was chosen to cross the horizon of heaven to find them. Lift them up to Him.

When you find the TaKa-like fire of destruction and death in your own heart, remember…this is not who you are…who you were meant to be. And God knows. He knows who you are; and He is able to place Himself, the source of life, in your very own heart…that you may live.

Reader, if your hope is in Christ, let the relief and joy flood over you as you look at your sin, your limitations, your failures, and say, “This is not who I am. God knows who I am. GOD knows. And one day, I will be like Him…free of all of this.”  Imagine what we will be like on that day, when we fully become who we were always meant to be!

If not, reader, what are you waiting for? He crossed the horizon to find you….

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” – Psalm 51:10
